Fenugreek (Methi) – An important herb which females should use-Why?



Fenugreek is an herb whose seeds and leaves have been used since time immemorial. Fenugreek, commonly called as ‘Methi’ in Hindi, ‘Methi‘ in Bengali, ‘Meth‘ in Punjabi, ‘Vendhayam‘ in Tamil, ‘Uluva‘ in Malayalam, ‘Menthulu‘ in Telugu, ‘Menthe‘ in Kannada, ‘Methi Dane‘ in Marathi has made a permanent place for itself in various households. Fenugreek seeds have a package of healthy compounds like lysine, L-tryptophan, alkaloids, and the group of steroidal saponins. Due to their outstanding health benefits, Fenugreek are used widely as a herbal medicine to cure several health issues across the countries in Asia and countries like Egypt, Greece and Italy. In India, Methi seeds are widely used in numerous culinary preparations.  But current research shows that they can do much more than that. From controlling diabetes to inducing labor to adding flavor to dishes, Methi seeds have had distinct benefits for your hair, skin, and health.

Methi seeds have the properties of estrogen and hence can increase libido. During menopause and post menopause, the Fenugreek seeds can help avert hot flashes and mood swings. In countries like India, Nepal, Bangladesh, this herb is widely used for treating several ailments like arthritis, indigestion, asthma and bronchitis.



It can induce labor and so pregnant ladies must use this carefully after Doctor’s consultation. On the other hand, in female, it can help remedy hormonal disorders and reproductive disorders, reduce menstrual pain and help in enlarging female breast.

Fenugreek (Methi) seeds have astounding results for lactating women. Few Studies have shown that when lactating women are given this natural herb, it can help increase milk production. It is also said that the oil content present in the herbal seeds are responsible for this characteristic. Thus for this advantage, it is recommended that lactating women consume fenugreek seeds 3 times a day.

Studies have revealed that patients who were given fenugreek seeds daily routine reported significant depressing of cholesterol levels within 20-25 weeks. In these cases, the risk of heart attack was reduced by 20-25%. For the reduction of cholesterol level, the recommended dose is 56 grams of Methi herbal seeds for the whole day.




In patients with type-2 diabetes, these natural seeds have shown to lower blood glucose levels. It is recommended that folks wishing to check their blood glucose levels take 500 mg of Fenugreek seeds twice a day.



Methi Seeds are an effective treatment for several skin problems like burns, eczema, abscesses, boils, and gout. Grind the fenugreek seeds into a fine powder and mix with lukewarm water. Take a piece of clean cotton cloth and soak it in this preparation. Place the soaked cloth on the affected portion and leave for some time.

Very few herbs are as beneficial as this herbal seeds for gastritis and heart burns. Methi seeds are very rich in mucilage. They can make an inner covering over the lining of the stomach and thus can prevent acid reflux and heartburn. To achieve this treatment, you may either sprinkle some Fenugreek seeds on your diet or swallow the seeds with water or any liquid before a meal.

While taken with lemon and honey, herbal seeds can help lower the temperature of the body during fevers. Take a spoonful of seeds and eat them along with a teaspoon of lemon juice and honey. You may also try herbal teas sold in some shops.

If you are taking some medicines, consume Methi seeds 2-3 hours before or after taking the medicines since the mucilage present in these seeds can affect pregnant ladies with the absorption of medicines by the intestine.
