Why do Brahmins wear a white thread (Janaeu) around their body?

Introduction
Janeu (white thread) is worn by every Hindu Brahmin of India. Wearing the sacred thread called the 'Janeu' is the most important rites for Hindus. Besides the Brahmins, Janeo thread is also worn by the Vaishyas and Kshatriyas. Hinduism has various traditions and rituals which keep the religion alive.

One of the most popular and sacred rituals is that of wearing this sacred Janeu by the Brahmin boys after they reach the age of 7-12 at the 'Upanayan Sanskar'. The ceremony of wearing the sacred thread or the 'Yagnopavitra' is known as Upanayanam. 'Upanayan Sanskar' is basically the 10th sanskar of 'Santana Hindu Dharma'.

The Upanayanam ceremony is normally associated with the higher caste Hindus. It is mandatory for the Kshatriya and the Brahmin boys to wear this sacred thread. The ceremony is usually performed when the child is ready for schooling. The holy thread is given to the child as a reminder to the commitment that the child would stay completely committed to education and learning, avoiding all distractions. During this ceremony the child receives his first lesson of reciting the 'Gayatri Mantra' from his father who becomes his first ‘Teacher’ or 'Guru'.

Here are a few benefits of wearing the holy thread:
  •  It's said that if you tie a Janeu (sacred thread) on your ear, then it will sharpen your memory and also gives various health benefits like treating constipation and keeps your stomach healthy!
  •  The holy Janeu ceremony is performed sitting cross-legged on the floor. This specific posture gives you various health benefits and keeps your posture straight.
  •  The 3 sacred threads of Janeu represent the three Goddesses- Lakshmi (wealth), Parvati (strength) and Saraswati (knowledge)!
  • There's a famous belief that once you use this sacred thread, then it will guard you against any negative thoughts or energy throughout your life.
  •  A scientific study has proven that those who use a Janeu do not suffer much of blood pressure problems in comparison to those who don't wear it.
Let us know more about this special ritual of Upanayanam and what the importance of it is:

The Sacred Thread
The strands of the sanctified thread have symbolic meanings. The sacred thread has 3 strands. A bachelor is supposed to wear only 1 thread, a married man should wear 2 threads and if the married man has a child then he should wears 3 threads. The 3 strands of the thread represent 3 debts of man which must never be forgotten.
They are:
  1. ·         The debt of the scholars.
  2. ·         The debt of one's teacher.
  3. ·         The debt of one's parents and ancestors.

The three strands of the thread also represent the three Goddesses, Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati. This indicates that the person becomes complete only with the help of these three goddesses of wealth, strength and knowledge respectively.

Significance of Upanayanam
The strands of the thread also stand for purity of words, thoughts and deeds of the wearer. Through the Upanayanam ceremony, the boy is introduced to the concept of Brahman and therefore, becomes qualified to lead the life of a Brahmachari according to the rules of the Manusmriti.

  3. Unless Upanayanam not done, one will not be a brahmin. Till that time he is casteless. only after Upanayanam one will be become Brahmin and eligible for study vedas and upanishads and perform poojas... ( This is what I learned from my grand parents )

  6. So far !!

It was more from perspective that in earlier days people use to travel with janve/ yadnopavit (very very strong threads even stronger which can be used for multiple tasks such as climbing and other tasks ) and darbha ( it is assumed that darbha had multiple usage and they were so strong that it had similar usage and ability same as any dagget or sword has it

So while travelling, janve and darbha considered to be important aspects

But later on these terms modified and people started getting colonized so there not much usage left of these two things ...and then people developed and further modified principal behind wearing the same as described very nicely above
