Sade-Sati is name ascribed to seven and half year long period of movement of Saturn (Shani Grah). This astrological period is much feared by those in India who give credence to Hindu Astrology.
The period of Sade-sati begins when Saturn entered the Zodiac sign immediately before the Sign of Moon at the time of the birth of the individual. That is, if the Moon sign (Ayamsha) at the time of birth of the person was Taurus, then the Sadesati begins when Planet Saturn enters Zodiac sign Aries.
The Sadesati continues while Saturn transits over this sign and the next two zodiac signs, i.e. the birth sign as well as the sign after it. Saturn (Shani Grah) spends around two and half years in each sign. To cross these three signs it takes about seven and a half years. Therefore, the name Sadesati which literally means 7 and 1/2.
According to Vedic Astrology, this is a troublesome and worrying period for the person who is going through it. There may be various challenges in a one’s life. If Planet Saturn is ill-placed in bad houses, he may face issues that reflect this bad placement. However, there is another theory that believes that though the sadesati period is challenging, it is not as damaging as various expert astrologers claim, and that various people achieve a lot of success during the period of Sadesati.
Planet Saturn, the karaka for discipline, hard work, authority and old age, will show results based on how the person has lived his/her life up till that point. If the person has been working hard and in discipline, this is the moment Saturn shows its rewards. The heaviest challenges of Sadesati during this time, and how the person deals with it, sets the tone for the next 22.5 years as Saturn starts to move around the 12th houses again.
The influence of Sadesati is supposed to be felt differently by people of different moon signs. It is said that persons of Moon sign Kumbh (Aquarius) do not have any negative effects from Sadesati, while people of Leo Moon Sign feel the most impact. Sade Sati is divided into 3 phases called the Peak, Rising and Setting and the results of Sade Sati vary as per the period phase native is going through. Vedic astrology also recommends certain remedies like Vedic Products like Blue Sapphire, Shani Mala and Mantras, that can be recited to please.
The Lord Saturn and limit the adverse effects of Saturn's Sadesati.

Another related astrological transit of Planet Saturn (Shani) is the Dhaiyya (2.5 years), also known as Small Trouble (Small Panoti), and Ashtamshani or Kantakshani. This transit of Planet Saturn occurs when the Saturn is transiting through the fourth sign from the birth Moon sign (Kantak Shani), or from the eighth sign from the birth moon sign (Ashtamshani). Vedic Astrology says that these 2 are hazardous periods, though not as much as the Sade-sati. But if there is a proper system or if you will follow the proper remedies, then this period of sadisati will not affect any human being.
